Light Sensitivity and the Tomatis Method

Treating Light Sensitivity with The Tomatis Method

Many children with ASD, APD or other developmental challenges suffer discomfort from bright light. Light Sensitivity, also known as Photophobia, is identified by an inability to tolerate light.

Light Sensitivity and the Tomatis MethodFor someone who is sensitive to any source of light, be it sunlight, incandescent light, LEDs, fluorescents, etc., photophobia can cause severe and even intolerable discomfort.

Photophobia is typically evidenced by a number of symptoms, including:

  • The constant need to either squint or close one’s eyes
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Nausea
  • Eye Strain
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Sleepiness
  • Irritability
  • Constantly watery eyes
  • Other individualised symptoms

The problem of light sensitivity seems to be an inability of the brain to properly adjust to various light levels. Imagine listening to the radio or watching television when, suddenly, the volume increases to the maximum and the controls are unresponsive. That is what it’s like for someone with light sensitivity: their brains cannot make adjustments to compensate for varying levels of brightness so they treat all light the same.

Scope of Effects

Light sensitivity affects people of all ages and can be either constant or intermittent. Common triggers for intermittent photophobia include exiting a movie theatre after a matinee and emerging into bright light or a dark room being suddenly illuminated. While most people react adversely to these things, they also adjust quickly to the difference. Someone with photophobia cannot adjust to the change at anywhere near the same rate as other people.

Photophobia can also be a constant problem and if it is for you or your child, there is a better than good chance that the Tomatis Method of therapy can help.

The Tomatis Method and Light Sensitivity

The Tomatis Method has helped scores of light sensitivity suffers manage and even completely overcome their symptoms. Dr. Tomatis discovered that by stimulating the nerves in an appropriate way using particular sound frequencies we can address the underlying issues with neuro-sensory motor function by:

  • Releasing sensory system protections
  • Facilitating input from functionally available sensory systems
  • Helping the brain correctly analyse and process input experiences in a balanced way
  • Encouraging re-engagement of inhibited neural pathways
  • Facilitating activation of alternative neural pathways if standard avenues cannot be accessed

The good news is that, even as an adult, your brain is capable of learning and developing these reflexes and that is how disorders like photophobia are overcome. Even if there is a pre-existing condition that is causing the issue, the Tomatis method can help you manage it and enjoy relief.
